چکیده

Using a relatively mild restriction on the beliefs of the MMEU − α preference functional, in which the decision maker’s degree of ambiguity and degree of pessimism are each parameterized, we present a rather general theory of religious choice in the decision theory tradition, one that can resolve dilemmas, address the many Gods objection, and address the inherent ambiguity. Using comparative static analysis, we are able to show how changes in either the degree of ambiguity or the degree of pessimism can lead a decision maker to “convert” from one religion to another. We illustrate the theory of religious choice using an example where the decision maker perceives three possible religious alternatives. JEL Classification: C44, D81, D83

This paper studies the effect of learning new information on peoples beliefs and their attitudes towards ambiguity. We propose a method to separate ambiguity attitudes from subjective probabilities and to decompose ambiguity attitudes into pessimism (capturing ambiguity aversion) and likelihood insensitivity. We apply our method in an experiment where we elicit the ask prices of options with pa...

We examine two extremes: total ambiguity and no ambigui...

Adverse Selection Under Ambiguity∗ Job Market Paper

This paper analyses a bilateral trade problem with asymmetric information and ambiguity aversion. There is a buyer and a seller who bargain over the exchange of an indivisible good. In the absence of ambiguity, the contract that maximizes the buyer’s payoff is a posted ...

Is luck on my side? Optimism, pessimism, and ambiguity aversion.

The influences of optimism and pessimism on ambiguity aversion were investigated in two tasks that manipulated the presence or absence of a potentially competitive experimenter. A total of 112 participants chose which option--ambiguous or known-risk--they preferred in the two slightly differing Ellsberg urns tasks. Optimism was measured using the Extended Life Orientation Test (ELOT). Highly op...
